Literature Circle Podcasts

Every semester the English Department of John Tyler Community College sponsors the Literature Circles. Here faculty sponsors meet with students for an informal discussion of a book that is read for pleasure. After attending the circles, I came up with the idea of audiofiles/podcasts to promote the books. I wrote short reviews and combined them with book excerpts, and then recorded the information using Audacity. These audiofiles were used to promote both the books and the entire program. The second semester I recruited talented students from the theater department to read the excerpts. This is now an ongoing project at Tyler.

Library 101 Screencast Tutorials

After being a distance student myself, I understand how important the library is, and how important it is for information to be remotely available. In my library instruction sessions I emphasize the resources that can be accessed on the web, and how students can make the library come to THEM. Library 101 grew out of that need. Though the curriculum is still in development, Library 101 will be a one credit class available in Blackboard. The series of webcasting tutorials were developed with Adobe Captivate.

Blogs: Journals of the 20th Century

After working with my colleague on developing a personal blog for her book discussion group, she suggested that I give a workshop on blogging during a John Tyler Event. The presentation was given first to the College President’s Board and then later to the wider college community. My presentation also included a workshop session where attendees set up their own blog in Blogger. In the two sessions I reached over 50 people.

LibrarySpace: John Tyler Community College Libraries Blog

Nearly a year after my presentation on blogging, the College Relations Department approached the library: would we like to set up a blog? CERTAINLY! Though I am the project lead, the blog is a collaborative work which uses the interests and talents of multiple staff members.  The blog promotes library programs, college activities, and aspects of the library’s collection.

Library Team Lead, Angel Tree Project

John Tyler is a huge participant in the Angel Tree Project. I have sponsored angels for five years, first independently, and now as part of the larger John Tyler Community. Now I head the library’s donations, organizing the purchases and gifts. Purchasing for children is such fun! With the combined purchasing power of the library we can truly make an amazing Christmas for a child (including books, of course.) My family has also voluteered at the distribution center on Tyler days.
